Werther

NZTR Welfare Ambassadors

Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther and Hong Kong Derby winner Ping Hai Star need little introduction, but in 2020 they now add Welfare Ambassadors to their incredible reputation.

These boys have had great racing careers, both cut short through injury, they now have the very important role of ‘nannies’ to our weanlings, racehorses and anyone on the farm needing a companion.

The welfare of the horses after racing is something that comes up every year, around November with the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the races are the highest stakes, and the biggest meetings.

This is when the industry gets the biggest backlash, so to prove that there is a life after racing the boys are going to show off their new careers, that even the owners that passed Ping in through the ring, still cared about where he ended up. That trainers like Andrew Campbell who started a horse as prominent as Werther and sold him off shore wanted him to come home and retire in New Zealand.

An initiative started through New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) Ping and Werther will be attending race meetings across the lower North Island to show that the majority of horses aren't discarded once they retire from racing, and that there is a future for so many Thoroughbred's off the track. Whether it be as Sport Horses, Polo Ponies, Breeding, Happy Hackers or as Nannies there is a Life After Racing.
