Libby Bleakley | Director
Raised in Martinborough, South Wairarapa, Libby was born with a passion for all things equine. After writing a horse-mad tale at school, she earned a trip to Newbury Park, then home of Classic Fame, Le Belvedere and Straight Strike. This was Libby’s introduction to the racing industry and she was completely hooked - at 11 years old. She spent every school holiday for many years at Newbury Park, experiencing both the racing side and breeding barn. Though she wasn’t born into the industry, Libby knew it was where she saw herself in the future, so after her early education was complete, she began working with horses as soon as she could. She spent time working for Grant Searle and Jeff Lynds in their racing stables, before a brief stint in Australia with Channel Ten, where she learned the ins and outs of marketing and client relations. Libby then returned to New Zealand to study an Equine degree at Massey University, and it was during this time she began working for the late, great Noel Eales. Noel taught Libby the art of observation: to truly know and understand a horse, it must be observed. To this day you will often find Libby observing various horses around the farm - it’s lucky their house is surrounded by paddocks!
Libby then went on to manage Newmarket Lodge for Dr John O’Brien, where she ran her first yearling preparation and attended the Karaka sales for the first time. Even that first draft she ever prepared contained a good horse by the name of Galleon’s Reach. Working for John taught Libby the incredibly complex process of equine reproduction and really cemented that passion for breeding and preparing horses for sale. In 2006, Libby was the recipient of the Sunline Trust International Management Scholarship, which saw her work at global farms Coolmore in Ireland, Vinery Stud in America and Dalham Hall in Darley. After this, she returned home to assist in the development and establishment of the breeding farm at Wellfield Lodge, where she was assistant manager for four years. During this time, Libby trained new stallions to stud, oversaw every foaling and trained numerous staff in the skill of yearling preparation and presentation. During this time, Wellfield Lodge had some record price sales for the farm. It was during her time at Wellfield Lodge that Libby met Sam and they decided to take the plunge and fill a hole in the marketplace down in the Manawatu: hence the creation of their pride and joy, Highden Park. In her downtime Libby enjoys family time with Sam and their two daughters, Kendall and Harlow, cooking and gaming.
Sam Bleakley | Director
Spending his younger years growing up in the lakeside town of Taupo, Sam pursued a career in the automotive trade where he became a senior mechanic for eleven years. After meeting Libby in 2008, he decided to move down to the Manawatu and was soon roped in to work with the horses. In 2013 Sam hung up his spanners and started full time on the farm. After a year or so, Libby saw Sam had a natural ability with horses and with her guidance he has become one of the best leaders to be seen on the Karaka sales complex.
Sam is jack of all trades, from doing all our own pasture maintenance work to driving our mares around the country for matings, but it is in yearling preparation that Sam absolutely excels and continues to turn out draft after draft of superb athletes. With Highden Park’s Honour Roll, he’s only ever known how to set ambitious goals and strive for them. In his brief free time, Sam and his dad have built a GTR race car that Sam enjoys racing during the Winter series when the farm is reasonably quiet. You may also find him on the golf course twice a year!
Kendall and Harlow Bleakley
In 2016, Sam and Libby welcomed daughter Kendall into the family. Kendall has a real passion for all things with an engine that go fast, much like her dad. She has a beautiful connection with animals and currently has a pony (Bucket, our teaser pony), two pet lambs and a puppy. Kendall enjoys science, swimming and dance and is a very social character. She loves to welcome visitors to Highden Park and is learning how to make the cuppas.
Her younger sister Harlow, born just after Karaka yearling sales in 2019 is a real tearaway with a strong passion for the outdoors. Not one to be cooped up inside, she is more than happy to don her wet weather gear and be outside any time of the year. She has a cheeky sense of humour and likes to be heard. Harlow enjoys swimming and being read to.

Pat is our resident farrier and has been with us from the beginning. Pat has spent a fair bit of time in different parts of the world, particularly in Japan perfecting his trade. He is a regular winner at the national farrier competitions. In his spare time he is a keen outdoorsman, spending time hunting or out on his farm riding the ponies with his two girls.
Savvy Steve
Steve Cleary of Savvy Touch is our physio. He treats the yearlings, spellers and our teaser pony Bucket, and has been with us for a few years, visiting the farm two to three times a year and also at Karaka.
Bucket
Bucket, now sixteen (aka Kendall's pony), is our teaser pony who has been with us since he was two years old.
